What is Krav Maga

The Israeli martial art Krav Maga is arguably the most effective martial art form on earth. Krav Maga is a scientific self defense system which aim at being realistic and practical. There is a difference between fighting and self defense. In self defense, the attacker fully commit himself in an attack trying to hurt or kill the defender. There are unlimited possibilities of how the attack can be made but Krav Maga categorize them and tries to give the best answer.

How was Krav Maga developed

The military department of Israel wants to train a group of powerful soldiers in a short time. Since training time is limited, they had to develop a form of martial art that can be quickly taught and quickly learnt. It must requires minimal practice and repetition to be mastered. Therefore, Krav Maga was born.

Instinctive Reaction

An important emphasis of Krav Maga is “instinctive reaction”.

For example, when a person was attacked by the attacker with a choke from the front, the firm grip of the attacker threatened the person and the person would have a natural instinctive response to go to the threat, which is the grip.

In order for the techniques to be learnt and mastered quickly with little repetitions, the technique must be build up the instinctive reaction so that it is natural to the learner. If it is natural, it would require minimal practice or repetition for the skill to stay.

Also, when under the pressure of a real situation, the Krav Maga techniques since they were built upon the person’s instinctive reaction, would come up easily and quickly. Therefore, Krav Maga is effective and practical.

Characteristics of Krav Maga Techniques

1. Dealing with the immediate danger

First and foremost, the technique must be able to eliminate the immediate danger effectively.

In the example of a front choke, the threat is the hand pressing against your throat. Krav Maga uses a plugging principle to deal with the danger. It is very effective and starts from the natural response.

Another important issue is variations of the attack. A choke can be applied with straight arms or bend arms. It would not make sense to create different techniques for different variations, because by the time you figured out which technique to use, you have already been killed by the attacker, perhaps five times.

Therefore, Krav Maga chooses a principle that covers the largest amount of variations to deal with the immediate danger. A good Krav Maga principle is one that can even be applied to attacks from the sides or the back.

 2. Dealing with the potential danger

Once you have dealt with the immediate danger, you will be in new position, a position that exposes you to potential dangers. A good Krav Maga technique must be able to deal with not only the immediate danger but also the potential danger.

We do this by executing a series of powerful counter attacks at the same time when we eliminate the immediate danger.

The series of counter attacks is usually led by a stunt. The stunt stop the attacker from attacking and you finish him with followup attacks.

3. Realistic and safe

The Krav Maga training is realistic which means it reflects the real situation so that you can really use the techniques when you face the threats. But obviously, the training must be safe so that you don’t get killed before you face the real situations.

4. Various states of readiness

In a real situation, you may be at various states of readiness when the attacks come. You may not notice someone is trying to hurt you until you are already grabbed by the attacker and falling. Good Krav Maga principles can help you deal with this kind of adverse situation.
